What is a generic drug?
Wikipedia gives the following definition: “Generic drug (pl. generic pills, short: generics) is a drug which is made and distributed without a brand name. A generic drug must contain the same active components as the original formula. In most cases, it's considered bioequivalent to the brand name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generic drugs are assumed to be identical in dosage, strength, route of administration, safety, efficiency, and intended use.”
Does a generic medicine differ from a brand name drug?
Not very much, really. But there's a difference, of course. To see the difference understandably we have made a table:
Comparison |
Result |
Details |
| Active ingredient | same | Whether a manufacturer produces brand name drugs
or generic drugs, the standards are the same. The ingredients are the
most significant part. The component in the drug that helps to cure
you or makes you feel better is named the "medicinal" or active
ingredient. While both generic and brand pills must have the same quantities
of best quality medicinal ingredients, other components may also be
in drugs. |
| Effect | same | Because the active ingredient is the same, the
effect made by the generic pills and the brand name pills is the same. |
| Name | different | Generic medicaments can't be manufactured under
the brand names because this is a infringement of copyright case. Generics
are commonly named by their active ingredient names. |
| Color | different | The color of a pill is also a copyright of a brand
company, so the color of generic pills is different from the colorl
of the original brand pills. |
| Shape | different | Shape of a pill is a copyright of a brand too,
so the shape of generic pills is different from the shape of the original
brand pills. |
| Price | different | Generic medicaments are considerably cheaper than
the brand name pills. |
Why are generic pills cheaper than the brand name pills?
The primary reason for the minimized price of generic medications is that the creation (innovation and development) of the generic drug runs at much more lower cost and therefore a lower price can be provided and still keep profitability.
Manufacturers of generic pills are primarily able to avoid the following 3 things that brand name pharmaceutic companies have:
- costs related with the research and development of the drug;
- costs related to getting regulatory approval (i.e. proving safety and efficacy of a drug);
- marketing and advertising costs.
First, Generic drugs manufacturers don't have the cost of drug discovery but alternatively they reverse-engineer existing brand name drugs to make it possible for them to manufacture bioequivalent variants.
Second, generic drugs manufacturers don't have the weight of proving the safety and efficacy of the drugs by clinical trials - instead, generic pills manufacturers must only prove the generic drug’s bioequivalancy to the existing brand name drug.
Third, pharmaceutic companies have the large benefit of the marketing and promoting that goes into advertising the new drug. The brand name pill has to prove itself in the eyes of the consumer, generic ones doesn't have to. The drugs that generic producers are selling have been on the market for typically a decade or even more and don't demand extra advertising. For the same reason, generic drugs manufacturers also don't give away sampling doses to advertise the products. The huge research, development and marketing costs obtained by the large pharmaceutic companies in innovating a new drug to the market is often mentioned as the cause for the high cost of new agents - they want to recover these costs before the patent expires. Generic drug manufacturers don't get these costs, with bioequivalence proving and manufacturing costing relatively little, are able to charge significantly less than the brand name pills.

What is the difference between the "Soft" and "Regular" pills? My order was for “soft” tabs but the drugs I got are hard!
“Soft” and “regular” are only terms describing the technique of use. Soft pills are meant for sublingual administration. They're placed under the tongue till they dissolve. Regular pills are taken with water. Both “soft” and “regular” pills are hard in their consistency.
