Allergy

An allergy is a type of immune response. Generally, the immune system responds to foreign microorganisms or particles by making special proteins called anti-bodies. These anti-bodies are capable for binding to discovering molecules, or antigens, on the foreign particle. This reaction between anti-body and antigen activates a series of chemical reactions organised to protect the body from infection. Sometimes, this same series of reactions are activated by harmless, normal substances such as pollen, dust. When this happens, an allergic reaction develops against the offensive substance or an allergen.

Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees. Mild allergies like hay fever are highly prevalent in the human population and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness, and runny nose. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and potentially death.
