Anticonvulsants are a class of drugs indicated for the treatment
of various types of seizures associated with seizure disorders such as epilepsy,
a neurological dysfunction in which excessive surges of electrical energy are

The anticonvulsants, also called antiepileptic drugs (AED),
belong to a diverse group of pharmaceuticals used in prevention of the occurrence

The goal of an anticonvulsant is to suppress the rapid and excessive firing

Some anticonvulsants have shown antiepileptogenic effects in
animal models of epilepsy. That is, they either prevent the expected development
of epilepsy or can halt or reverse the progression of epilepsy. However, no
drug has been shown to prevent epileptogenesis in human trials.

GABAPENTIN (Neurontin) affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. Gabapentin is used with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures and for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles).
