The word osteoporosis literally means porous
bones. It occurs when bones lose an excessive amount of their protein and mineral
content, particularly calcium. Over time, bone mass, and therefore bone strength,
is decreased. As a result, the bones become fragile and break easily. Even a
sneeze or a sudden movement may be enough to break a bone in someone with severe
osteoporosis. Breaks in the hip and spine are of special concern because they
almost always require hospitalization and major surgery; and may lead to other
serious consequences, including permanent disability and even death.
Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads
to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD)
is reduced, bone microarchitecture is disrupted, and the amount and variety
of non-collagenous proteins in bone is altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the
World Health Organization (WHO) in women as a bone mineral density 2.5 standard
deviations below peak bone mass (20-year-old healthy female average) as measured
by DXA; the term "established osteoporosis" includes the presence
of a fragility fracture. Osteoporosis is most common in women after menopause,
when it is called postmenopausal osteoporosis, but may also develop in men,
and may occur in anyone in the presence of particular hormonal disorders and
other chronic diseases or as a result of medications, specifically glucocorticoids,
when the disease is called steroid- or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (SIOP
or GIOP).

Indocin
INDOMETHACIN (Indocin®) is used for treating moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is used to treat gout or certain types of bursitis and tendonitis. Indocin treats the symptoms of pain and inflammation. It does not treat the disease that causes those symptoms
DICLOFENAC (Voltaren®-XR) is an anti-inflammatory drug. Diclofenac reduces the joint pain, stiffness, inflammation, or swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
METHOTREXATE is a type of chemotherapy that is used to treat certain kinds of cancer and other diseases. Methotrexate affects cells that are rapidly growing such as cancer cells, cells of psoriasis, and cells in your mouth and stomach. Methotrexate is used to treat many different types of cancers including leukemias, lymphoma, breast cancer, and others. Lower dose of methotrexate may be given to patients with psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis
MECLOFENAMATE (meclofenamate sodium) and MEFENAMIC ACID (Ponstel®) are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Meclofenamate helps relieve inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Both drugs help relieve mild to moderate pain, including menstrual cramps or premenstrual discomfort
IBUPROFEN (Motrin®) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Motrin is used in adults for relief of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, treatment of menstrual pain, and relief of mild to moderate pain. In children aged 6 months and older it can be given to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain. It is also used to relieve the symptoms of juvenile arthritis
